run-ins with the past

captain britain... it made sense to me... don't ask...Anyone who's been paying attention for a while here at yaniblog knows that I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason... but that doesn't mean that you always know what the reasons are, or ever find out...

Since today was an absolutely glorious sunny day, I figured that it would be a waste to just sit around the house, so I decided to head down to Port Adelaide and take some photos. I figured I could tape Queer Eye and leave at noon... but that meant that I needed some lunch, so I figured I would swing past the shops, grab something from Baker's Delight, and then drive down to the Port.

But, instead of just wacking the video on at roughly the right time and leaving it to do it's thing, for one reason and another (including discovering that Fred Savage is "playing gay" in this seemingly brand new sitcom, Crumbs, which they've started playing during the daytime here... who knew) I didn't leave the house when I'd originally intended to.

Anyway, I parked the car, ducked into the shops, grabbed my food and a beverage, and headed back to the car. As I came out into the underground carpark there were two people headed towards the entrance, and my "gay-spider-senses" started tingling... I hadn't even seen the guy (he was kind of out of sight behind a pole), and had only heard his voice for a fraction of a second, but my brain went "faygola"... so I was playing more attention so I could see if he was cute or not...

And when he did come into view, I realised that it was EnglishX... and he'd recognised me and smiled and said hello (he always was incredibly polite), so I just smiled and said hi back, but neither of us stopped (I think he was with his Mum anyway... or some other random short older woman) or attempted to speak to each other beyond the hello.

EnglishX isn't technically an ex, since we never technically dated... but I think we came pretty close... I met him back a hundred million years ago when I was 22 and living with my former flatmate, Ludo, and doing the club thing pretty much every weekend... I remember meeting EnglishX, and I must have given him a card with my number on it... I did that a lot at the time, it was incredibly pretentious of me... but I can't remember if that was the night that I took some other random guy home, or rather he took me home, or not... I think it might have been, hence the giving of the card... thank god I never drank, my memory would be even more screwed up than it is already...

Anyway, EnglishX called and we chatted on the phone for a while, I discovered he was only 17, much to my annoyance, since he was about 6'4" and looked like he was in his 20's... and I'd broken up with a 17 year old not that long before... but we decided to meet up in town and hang out anyway. What was probably supposed to just be hanging out for an hour or so turned into a whole afternoon and evening, he met Lownee at the gym, and ended up coming back to the apartment with me and met both Ludo, and Ma (since it was the regularly scheduled night for her to come over and have dinner with us).... and everyone really liked him... but then, he was very likable... and, come to think of it, lickable too...

We hung out some more after that, and yes, things did get sexual at some stage (although, I honestly don't remember where that fell on the timeline), but I have to admit, it wasn't the best sex I've ever had, even though he was cute and attentive and passionate and had a great body... as I told him much later, I always felt like I should have been leaving money on the dresser afterwards (although it was actually my bedroom, so I'm not sure how that works), he always made it all about the other person, and it was very hard to actually give him pleasure... advice he told me some years later he'd taken to heart and made a conscious effort to avoid that in his future relationships (ie, although it sounds harsh, it was untimately a good thing).

At the time he identified as bi (although I think he's upgraded that to gay these days, or at least predominantly gay), and had only just come out to his family, and for whatever reasons, his mother had made him promise not to date any guys... and guess who got to be the first person he had to test that promise with... yup, you got it... this little gay duck... so, naturally, our relationship went nowhere fast. I think it gave him a wakeup call though, and not long after that he did start dating a guy.

He's also the person who help me to break the legs on my bed... and certain regular readers can now remove their minds from the gutter... we were horsing around in the apartment, fully clothed, during the daytime, in the presence of Ludo and, I think, Lownee, and chasing each other around, ran into my room and both flopped down on the left side of the bed, only to have the legs give out and the whole thing collapse on the left side, throwing us off the bed and ensuring that my bed has lain on the floor ever since.

Over time our social circles moved apart, and we didn't see each other for a very long time. Then I ran into him at Mars one night years and years later and we traded numbers and vowed to catch up... which resulted in exactly one telephone call I think... and then we drifted again.

But since Adelaide is such a Two Degrees of Kevin Bacon town as I've said before, I've seen him around, but at a distance, from time to time, and, of course, seen his profile on Gaydar...

The interesting thing is that if I had left the house this morning when I "should have", then I would never have seen him, since the "crossover time" was really, really short... in fact, if I'd gone somewhere else to grab lunch, or maybe even if I'd gone up to the supermarket to get my drink instead of grabbing one when I got my food, then we probably wouldn't have crossed paths.

So I'm not sure if the Universe is up to something, or if this was just one of those random happenstances... since neither of us were inclined to stop and chat, I'm thinking happenstance... but if I either run into him again, or run into other people from my past close enough to say hi to, then I'll know that the Universe is definitely up to something... course then I'll have to work out what to do about it too...

Oh, and the image... Captain Britain... well, my brain went: "EnglishX... sounds like Weapon X... I think there might be a British superhero... hmmm, I wonder if I can find something on him"... and, while I couldn't find the one I was originally thinking of, I did come up with Captain Britain... oh hush... it made sense in my brain...

There's no big story behind this week's Random Hotness... the images come via The Pretty Boys Club, and I just thought that Alex was hot... plus I like the way they were shot... low light, dark background, baby oil... the photographer's friends...

movies: fearless

fearless - fate made him a warrior, courage made him a heroTonight's movie de jour was Fearless...

I didn't actually realise it was going to be a "reading movie" (ie, with subtitles), since I think that all the other movies in the same vein that I've been to see have been dubbed. But it didn't really make that much difference to the movie experience, other than the usual "problems" with subtitles, namely trying to keep track of what people are saying, but trying to watch their faces at the same time.

I'm sad to say though, that when you compare Fearless to the other movies from that genre that I've seen, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and House of Flying Daggers, it just doesn't stack up.

That's not to say that it's a bad movie necessarily... it's just not as lush and visual and grand as the other three. It tries it's best about halfway through the movie, but by then it just feels like it's too little too late.

And I have to say, the first half of the movie I just spent being frustrated with Jet Li's character... partly because the character is so arrogant and self-centred... but also because Li seems to be giving this really over the top performance and almost literally chewing the scenery as he goes. I know why he did it though... so that he actually had somewhere to go when his character finally starts to redeem himself. But it's still slightly annoying to watch.

The fight sequences are, as you would expect from something choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping, both beautiful and brilliantly shot... yeah, there were a couple of spots where my brain either went "that's not physically possible" or else "there was some CGI in there somewhere", but nothing overly stood out.

And there is a LOT of fighting, especially in the first half, surrounded by just enough plot to stop you from getting bored... in fact, I think the first five minutes or so is solid fighting, then we get into the plot and the whys and wherefores.

I don't know that I would recommend rushing out to see Fearless on the big screen, but it's probably a good "Friday night DVD & Pizza" movie.

montage monday: colour story

colour storyI didn't actually intend to make today's Monday Montage a colour story in white, purple, blue and pink... it just kind of happened... I'd planned to do something with spring flowers, and took a few shots on my trip to the supermarket yesterday, but yesterday it was sunny and this morning it was all cloudy, so I was very nearly going to sulk and not do a montage, but decided to take the camera anyway and see what happened...

Well, as you can see from the fact that the shots are pretty flatly lit, the sun didn't come out, but I took a heap of shots of random spring flowers... actually the flat light didn't hurt that much, especially since I shot quite a few white flowers... but anyway, when I got home and looked at the shots, I realised that I had a whole world of white, blue, purple and pink flowers... so in the end, I went with that.

What I just realised is that the colours in today's montage are very similar to the colours in the Video Hits CD cover from yesterday's post... scary...

Fricken J... he's asking me for website design advice on MSN, but he seems to have already made up his mind and just wants me to agree with him... *gnashes teeth*

Ma and I did the shopping thing again on Saturday, and made out like bandits at the Red Circle Boutique... they were selling off the last of their winter clothes at low, low, low prices, and we both managed to find some stuff... granted Ma found about three times as much stuff as me... but I did manage to find a shirt and a long sleeved teeshirt, which had been $27 and $25 dollars respectively... and they both ended up costing $7 each... Bargain...

I also managed to find another interestingly distressed pair of jeans, but they were $45, marked down to about $20... but the good thing is that they're yet another size smaller than the last pair I bought... yaaay me again... and it was also fortunately, since they were the only size in that style, being in the sale area and all...

When Ma and I got back from shopping... well, actually, it started before we left... because I'd 'sploded the casserole dish, and little bits of glass went everywhere, I'd asked Ma to bring down her vacuum cleaner to assist me in getting rid of any residual bits of glass... which she did... but this led to what she and I describe as "Washing the Windowsill Syndrome"... WtWS is taken from an old For Better or For Worse cartoon strip, where the mother wipes down the windowsill because its dirty, then realised the window is dirty and cleans that too, then notices the curtains need to be washed... basically, any item that is cleaned will automatically make everything else look filthy and in need of a clean...

So since my place needed (and still needs) a good clean in some areas, we picked up some new cleaning products while we were out and came back with the intention of making my kitchen squeeky clean... however, we decided first that it was probably Dustbunny season, and while we had Ma's vacuum here, we should move my computer desk first and kill off the Dustbunny colony from behind it...

In essence, we washed the windowsill...

I will say that the Dustbunny colony behind my computer desk hasn't been culled in a while... a long while... a really, really long while... shut up... I don't own a vacuum cleaner and I hate cleaning... and if I can's see it, it doesn't exist...

But we took the computer apart (so many fricken cables), dusted all the bits, moved them out of the way, then pulled out both the chest of drawers and my bedside cabinet... trust me, you don't want to know what was back there... lets just say I call it a Dustbunny colony for a reason... those things has been breeding back there... anyway... once they'd been exterminated, we decided to do a job I've been meaning to do for ages and ages, but never gotten around to, taking all the keys off my keyboard and giving them a good clean...

The look of the keyboard before never really bothered me... yeah, I knew it was kinda grotty, but it had gotten that way over time, so I just lived with it... but now... good lord... it's all one colour again... and clean... it's fabulous...

Again, we won't mention the Dustbunnies that lost their lives once all the keys were removed from the keyboard and the case was swept out...

I did have a little bit of trouble getting the Enter key back in properly... that bugger is tricky... it's got two little wire bits in addition to the plastic connector, and the wire thingies cross over each other... it's not easy to put back... and I didn't manage it on Saturday... I got frustrated and gave up... but after using it, or trying to use it, on Sunday, I finally gave in, removed the keyboard and replaced it correctly, so now it actually works properly.

We never did get around the doing the kitchen though... maybe next week...

And now, lets give a moment of silence for all the Dustbunnies who gave their lives on Saturday so I could have a cleaner apartment...

Thank you...

While I was at the Seven Day Supermarket on Sunday there was this woman who kept asking the lone checkout chick, who had a line of people at the checkout already, where the Mascarpone cheese was... the girl told her where it should be, and off the woman wandered... then came back, and said she couldn't find it... the poor girl was doing the best she could and told the woman she would show her in a minute, but she obviously had these other customers to serve.

Anyway, I was wandering around, since I too needed the assistance of said checkout chick, but I was quite content to wander about aimlessly until she was free... and after the woman went back to her again about the fricken Mascarpone, I decided to take matters into my own hands and cruised down the dairy aisle to see if I could see it...

There was cream and cottage cheese and ricotta and butter and cheese... but I couldn't see the Mascarpone... so I kind of gave up and was heading back up the aisle, just looking at the labels on the shelves to see if I could see where it SHOULD have been from the price tags... and then I spotted it... Mascarpone... they had tons of the stuff... granted it was in very squat little containers and they were on the top shelf, so it may be that the woman just didn't see them.

I grabbed one and headed over and gave it to her. She was very appreciative... as was the checkout chick when I told her I'd found the Mascarpone for the woman. And all so I didn't have to listen to the woman whinge to the checkout chick. I made two people happy... well, three, if you count me...

musical flashback trauma

video hits 1986-1996Oh man... now I feel old...

Video Hits was doing a special playlist as part of their twentieth birthday, and the release of a couple of CDs and matching DVDs with music from over the past 20 years, so today they played mostly stuff from the first CD, which is 1986-1996... which works out to when I was between the ages of 12 to 22... my premium music ages...

The first song they played was a really dancey early 90's number and I just had to get up and go dance around in the lounge room like a crazy person... then the second song came on and I thought, "wow... I haven't heard this in about a billion years", so I stood there humming along and swaying in time with the music... and so on and so forth...

In fact, the whole morning was like a progression of songs that I remembered, but hadn't heard in a very long time... and scarily, or sadly, there wasn't a song there that I didn't remember... at least not once it started playing...

And that's when I started to feel old... especially when I caught myself thinking "they just don't make music like this now"... but then again, the latter half of that spread, 1990 onwards, was the era of really strong house and dance music, and also the time I was going to a lot of parties with my friends and dancing like mad... and I really liked a lot of the dance and house... that whole era has a fond place in my heart really... hoodies, crystals, baseball caps and a lot of English music on our charts... and now it all seems to be American hip hop, bling, badass rappers and fine black women shakin their bootay... seriously... there have been mornings where I've gone six or seven songs without seeing a single white person...

So the trip down memory lane went something like this (there were a few current songs shoehorned in between the oldies, but I left those off the list)...

Does anyone else remember all of these?

It's also interesting to see who is still around from that list... there's only about six of them that are still making music as far as I know...

And should I mention I used to have a massive crush on Rick Astley... tragic really... but then, I was about 14 at the time...

Your amazing energy draws people to you, and you give them great insight in return.

You hold a great amount of power over others, without even trying.

You have the makings of an inventor, artist, religious leader, or prophet.

In love, you are sensitive and passionate. You connect with your partner on a very deep level.

You have great abilities, but you are often way too critical of yourself.

You don't fit in - and instead of celebrating your differences, you dwell on them.

You have high expectations of yourself. But sometimes you set them too high and don't achieve anything.

photo friday: magnolia

magnolia 2002This blast from the past (2002 to be exact) was inspired by The Other Andrew's recent spate of magnolia shots, particularly the one with the blue, blue, blue sky...

Something about this shot is just a whole world of southern belles, mint juleps, and sitting on the porch sayin' "I declare" a lot... (yeah, I know, my idea of Southern living is all screwed up, coming, as it does, mainly from Blanche on the Golden Girls)...

I go past the same tree on my walk every morning now, but since I noticed that it's in flower again there actually hasn't been a sunny morning, so I just haven't felt inspired to take my camera out with me.

Hopefully the weather will improve next week, so I can try and capture the flowers before they vanish.

random blue hotness

Today's Random Hotness is courtesy of Addicted to Boy Beauty... it's the same place I snagged the majority of the images for BlueDragon's birthday card...

I have no idea who the poolboy is... or if the blue colour in these shots is natural or the work of some heavy Photoshop processing... but I have to say I really like the look... especially the shot on the right, although his eyes doesn't show up as much in that one as they do in the one on the left.

And on a related note, I spent a large chunk of yesterday morning going through every single previous Random Hotness fixing up the formatting so they didn't look like bastard step-children on my new template... on the plus side I actually found what is probably a better way to format them than the way I was originally doing it... yay me...

Update: It's amazing what random clicking around the internet can get you... this guy is Christian Yanik... and he has a profile on ModelMania.com...

pineapple rice surprise

pineapple rice surprise 2006When I was a kid, dessert on a Sunday afternoon didn't get any better than Pineapple Rice Surprise... for more than a few birthdays my two cousins and I would happily opt to have PRS instead of a cake.

And so highly prized were the glace cherries that decorated the top, that when we got our portion with our cherry on it, the cherry would come off, be licked clean of meringue and then placed on out coaster so it could be "kept safe" by turning our glass upside down and placing it over the cherry until we had finished eating, so nobody else could steal it. Not that I ever remember anyone actually stealing anybody else's cherry...

I'm guessing that the recipe came off the back of a packet of Calrose Rice... but I honestly don't know.

And for the record, I know this isn't an everyday kind of thing... hell, it's not even a "sometimes" food... it's very definitely a "special occasion" food (of course, the only special occasion I have today is christening my new casserole dish after the untimely death of the old one)... but it tastes so damn good...

Pineapple Rice Surprise

2/3 cup Calrose Rice (medium grain rice)
1 cup boiling water
3 cups milk
2 tablespoons margarine
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
2 eggs (separated)
450g can of pineapple pieces (drained)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons brown sugar
Glace cherries for decoration

Pour boiling water over rice in medium saucepan. Stand for 10 mins, then drain off the water.

Add milk to the pan, cover and place on low heat. Stir occasionally until rice is tender and mixture has thickened (about 35 mins).

Remove from heat, add sugar, margarine and beaten egg yolks. Stir over heat for 1 minute. Remove and add vanilla. Pour into casserole dish and allow to cool.

Spoon most of the pineapple over the rice mixture. Beat the egg whites until they become stiff, add sugar, then beat until meringue is stiff and glossy. Spread over pineapple, then use fork to create peaks in the meringue.

Decorate with reserved pineapple and cherries into flower design. Sprinkle with brown sugar.

Cook in moderate oven (180ºC) for 15 minutes until meringue is golden brown.

papa's got a brand new bag...

watermark template 2006Or rather... yaniblog's got a brand new look...

Honestly it's not quite right yet... I'm not loving the way the text looks in the Blogger profile (mostly the text colour and the length of the lines)... and because this is so much wider than my old template it looks like Random Hotness's mood indicators are probably going to be universally screwed throughout the whole blog...

*sigh*

On the plus side, this one is about 100 times easier to change than the previous template...

But after I commented yesterday about wanting a whole new look for the blog, I sat down and actually started to take a couple of things apart to see how they worked and see how I could modify them...

I'd kinda worked it out by lunchtime, but I took some time off to grab some lunch, watch some Queer Eye, and then go shopping briefly... when I got back I sat down and really hammered it out... scrapped everything that I'd been working on before lunch and came up with something that I liked... then tweaked it... and tweaked it... and tweaked it...

Like I mentioned about BlueDragon's birthday card, I'm really easily sucked into a design project... and this was no exception... I must have started working on it at about 2:30, maybe 3pm... I didn't come up for air, literally, until about 6:30pm... I don't even think I got up to pee that whole time... nothing... just sitting here fiddling with images in Photoshop and CSS and HTML...

Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle...

And then I came back to it at about 9:30 and fiddled some more...

But here it is... I'm going to live with it for a few days, maybe a week, so I can see how it looks and how it performs... I'll probably tweak certain bits of it during that time (although if anyone can tell me how to alter the text in the profile section, and get rid of that white streak up at the top, then I love you long time!)...

Thoughts? Opinions?

montage monday: gum leaves

gum leaves 2006See... I promised there wouldn't be any more Linear Park themed Montages...

I was down at Ma's place yesterday, mostly to help her with installing the software for her mobile on the computer (which, as it turns out, would load, but then wouldn't recognise the phone when we plugged in the USB cable)... and while I was there I figured I could wander around, because she has this huge nature strip right near her place, and find a montage... I actually did do it once before, back when I very briefly did montages on a Sunday...

As I drove past the nature strip just before I got to Ma's place, I started noticing all the gum trees, and thought that there had to be enough different types of leaves to make something out of... turns out I was right. It's all very "Montagious Australiana" thought I have to say...

Because I went up to Ma's place on Sunday, I ended up being at kind of a loose end on Saturday... I'm used to going shopping or something on Saturday, so by about 2pm I was kind of at a loose end... and stayed that way for the rest of the day... tragic really...

Continuing on a similarly tragic vein, I was happy to discover while I was getting a paper on Saturday that my local Baker's Delight is back... it quite literally disappeared off the face of the earth, or at least, the face of my local shopping center, way back at the beginning of June... actually I discovered it was missing after my first Linear Park walk... I came back via the shopping center to get some lunch and where it had been was now a big pile of rubble being worked over by bulldozers... quite a shock really... anyway, it's back now, in a different place thanks to the ongoing makeover the shopping center is getting, but at least it's there. I think I've mentioned before that I have an overdeveloped relationship with the Baker's Delight girlies... well, some of them anyway... so it's not like I was just glad that the bread product store was back... okay... maybe a little...

Spring must be on the way... not only are the days nice and sunny (if not always that warm, at least inside my house anyway), and the flowers blooming, the bees buzzing and other spring archetypes... but I suddenly have an overwhelming urge to reorganise and tidy things... the year before last was the worst for that though... I'd just bought a new teevee and a DVD player... so I had to reorganise my whole living room so that they would fit in my place properly, including getting rid of a book case... ghastly, but true... which led to three or four weekends back-to-back with Ma and I just about tearing the house apart cleaning, sorting out junk, going through all of my books and selling off the extras... washing the windows, reorganising the kitchen cupboards and shelves... everything... and now I have an urge to do it all again... okay, not the same stuff over again... but I just know that there is going to have to be a ritual clearing out of the wardrobe in the next couple of weeks... my wardrobe is just too full, and there are things in there I haven't worn in ages... and stuff that will be too big now... and also possibly stuff that actually will fit me again...

Because I was at a loose end on Saturday, it kind of started then... I had a bunch of junk piled up on top of the books on the bottom shelf of the bookcase where I keep my DVDs... so I went through all that, and either put it away somewhere more appropriate, or else just chucked it... and of course, once that was tidy I stated casting a critical eye on the painting that J made for me. It had been leaning up against the bottom of my CD rack since he gave it too me, partly because the paint was still drying out, and partly because I didn't know what the hell to do it with... but it just seemed to be taking up too much space, and really needed a home... so much, much later that night, while watching something random on teevee, I kept glancing at it and suddenly got inspired to put it up at the top of one of my bookcases, the one on the left... it doesn't look too bad... it will take a while to get used to it there since it's so dark against what used to be a big chunk of white wall, but I think it will work. I might just need to get something to maybe spray over it to protect it from dust or whatever.

Speaking of dust and Spring... I don't know if I've suddenly developed mild (or not so mild) hayfever, but I was sniffling and sneezing all day yesterday... as well as through most of my walk this morning... I'm slightly better now... but still a little sniffly...

Another thing that I think might be part of this whole Spring Cleaning fetish is that I suddenly really, really, really, really want a new look for the blog... the pink glitter I have now is fine, and I like it, but I want something new... maybe even a whole new look altogether... but I had a look at the other Blogger templates that it would be fairly easy to fool around with the same way I've fooled around with this one, and honestly, nothing appeals... well, there is one... but I don't know what I would do with it to "yanify" it... and I can't even find a new image and colour scheme for the template I'm using now... every time I try something, it just doesn't look right... dammit...

My neighbours are still getting on my nerves... actually more than that... at certain points, they really do make me insane... especially since the annoying little Soccer Ball Boy seemed to have found not just one, but two equally annoying little friends on Friday night... and then some of the grown-ups sounded like they'd joined in with the kids... and it was just a pain in the butt... is it too much to ask to not hear my neighbours? Seriously! I did have a realisation as to why it all annoys me so much, at least in part. I live in a block of apartments that are either one bedroom or else studio (ie the bedroom is the living room is the kitchen kind of deal) apartments. Which means they should either be for single people like myself, or else young couples... or not young couples... but just the couple... once you have a kid, move out and go live in fricken suburbia with the rest of the Breeders thank you... or at least move out to a place that actually has enough bedrooms or space for the size of your family... I don't want kids or families in my apartment block... if I did I'd live somewhere else. This rant was brought to you by the letter F and U... *smirk*

While I was at Ma's, she gave me a new casserole dish to replace the one I blew up last week... she'd bought it recently because it's the same shape as the old one. It's made of glass too, but this time clear instead of white (which should make for some interesting viewing of various things inside said dish) and the only down side seems to be that this new one isn't quite as big or deep as the old one... or as thick, glasswise, I think... which could be deadly... ah well... it'll just have to do...

I finally got around to paying my parking ticket... just now actually... I was going to make a comment about not having paid it yet, but just thought, well, why don't you just pay the damn thing so you can stop worrying about it... I still think it was completely bogus that I even got it in the first place... but what are you gunna do...

While I was in my wallet getting out my credit card, I also decided it was probably time I ordered a new Cinebuzz card, since the one I have is going to snap at any moment... well, not totally, but there is this strip along the top that's going to go... it's already about halfway there now... so I just did that too... granted it could take a month before I get the new one... but at least it's on the way.

See... Spring... it makes me get organised...

droplets 2006In honour of the fact that I got caught by a rainstorm during my walk this morning and was thoroughly soaked, I figured I would go with this shot from the Linear Park collection... my focus is a little squiff (the sharpest things are right at the back of the shot), but I like it.

'sploded

I'm about halfway between feeling like a complete tool and having heart palpitations here...

I was cooking some fish fillets for dinner tonight, frozen ones, and I had them in the oven in a baking dish as per the instructions on the box.

Only I hadn't planned terribly well, so the vegetables that I'd made to have with it were already ready, while the fish fillets still seemed frozen and had ten minutes left to cook. The instructions on the box did call for a "shallow" baking dish, and I really only had one that was big enough to get both of the fillets in, the oval shaped Corningware one that we've had since I was a kid and that I have used to make Crumble and Toona-Noodle-Do among other things. But it's not what you would really call shallow.

However the lid is deep enough to hold the fish... but I didn't work that out until about halfway through... I decided to switch them over anyway, since I was sure that the fish would cook faster in the shallow lid...

The switch went fine, the fish went back in the oven... but the baking dish was sitting on my wooden chopping board just radiating heat... so I figured I should probably cool it down...

And I wasn't thinking...

So I poured water into it...

Cold water...

A lot of cold water...

Into a hot glass dish...

It exploded!

But not right away, oh no... it let me fill it about three quarters full of water first... and then it just blew up, right there in front of me... and all the water went everywhere... all over the countertop, all over the kitchen floor... luckily not all over me, since my reflexes made me jump back like a scalded cat. And my heart started hammering away a mile a minute...

I killed the casserole dish... which featured majorly in the vast majority of my childhood because it was used to make my favourite dessert in the whole entire world, Pineapple Rice Surprise (which I haven't blogged the recipe for, but I will have to now that I've mentioned it)... and now it's in a lot of really large and really sharp shards inside, of all things, my plastic watering can (since some of them are still a little hot), waiting to be thrown away.

Of course, the first thing I had to do, before I'd even picked up any of the pieces, or recovered from the shock, or mopped up any of the water for that matter, was to call Ma and tell her I 'sploded the Pineapple Rice Surprise dish... she wasn't as distraught about it as I was, but then it wasn't a major, if inconsequential, piece of her childhood that just got reduced to garbage.

Now I just feel like a tool for having 'sploded it...

My kitchen floor is covered with damp towels...

And the fish wasn't even that great...

This week's Random Hotness comes via niwdenapolis... and he explains it pretty succinctly... so I won't try and reinvent the wheel, I'll just steal his text...

In the current issue of UPstreet Magazine photographer Richard Phibbs and Fashion Stylist Marcus Steptoe tackled the question "does a suit makes a man?"

I'm not sure about the answer to that one... but I do know that out of all the guys featured, this one was my favourite... and he looks pretty good in or out of a suit.

in no particular order...

Okay, so here we go... this should be interesting...

Way back in September last year, Larry sent out some Letters to the Blogsphere... secret truths about people on his blogroll that he wasn't brave enough to tell them directly.

Then, while I was flicking through links from comments on Larry's blog recently, I came across Curtis's blog... where he'd picked up on Larry's idea and produced a list of his own.

Which brings us to me...

After reading Curtis's list, I thought it might be a good idea to try and produce a list of my own...

So, in no particular order, if I could tell some of the people on my blogroll anything, this is what I could say:

Blogger #1: If you and I ever did meet, I think there would be some very long and slightly intense conversations that happened, you're definitely someone I could see myself sitting around with until 4am talking about life and the meaning of the universe one second, and hot movie stars the next. But you haven't been around much lately, and that kind of makes me a little sad, because I miss you.

Blogger #2: I think that in the real world you and I would probably get on really well... you're smart and funny and have a slightly twisted streak that a lot of my real world friends have had in them... and on top of that you write in such an engaging way I feel as thought I already know you. I will admit to having the makings of a very small crush on you... but that's okay, since it's only a little one.

Blogger #3: I have to admit, I don't know you very well yet, but so far I like what I've read... You've raised enough of my interest to keep me coming back for more. And you've surprised me at least once, which isn't something that happens too often.

Blogger #4: You, out of all my blogbuddies, remind me most of myself... Sure, we've walked totally different life paths, but I think, at the core of who we are, there's a lot that's the same. But like me, you really need to reconnect with the world... of course, like me, that's not so easy for you to do. But I have faith in you. And I have no doubt that the current path you're on it definitely the right one for you.

Blogger #5: You don't post all that often, but when you do it's usually a well crafted little nugget. I get the feeling you write for a living, although I could be wrong. You make me smile sometimes... and other times I just roll my eyes.

Blogger #6: I adore reading your blog, but seriously, you just have to lighten up... take a big deep breath... hold it... now let it out... and just chill out. Not everything that happens is an attack on you personally. I don't think you're completely comfortable in your own skin yet, but I hope I'm around to see you when you are, because you're only going to get better...

Blogger #7: Why you are still single just baffles me... okay, I actually know the reasons, but still... that fact that someone hasn't descended on you and scooped you up before letting you do unspeakable things to their naked body just confounds me. You're truly the triple threat... wise, sweet and a sexual beast... If I was anything near your type I think I'd have a much bigger cybercrush on you than I actually do...

Blogger #8: Your blog also feels like you could write for a living. I actually quite like the way you write, your sense of imagery is very strong. I'm not sure I understand you yet... but that's okay... some days I don't understand me either.

Blogger #9: I really enjoy watching you explore who you are... it's interesting that probably the majority of your regular readers could see where you were headed before you realised it yourself. But I'm enjoying hearing about this new chapter of your life that you've entered... I just hope the posts stay as interesting and indepth as they always have been in the past.

Blogger #10: I think you've been living where you are for much too long... and you don't actually realise how amazing you look... you're far too self critical where that's concerned... although you do seem to have a big heart, so maybe it's good that you never worked out how hot you are...

Blogger #11: In some ways you're a lot of the things I wish I could be... you seem very brave, and very confident in who you are... and you definitely know what you want out of life. I applaud you for all those things, and wish I could be a little bit more like you.

Blogger #12: I wish you posted more often than you do... you and your life are so very different to mine, I like seeing how the other half lives as the saying goes...

Blogger #13: Sometimes I feel like you're trying your hardest to be biggest gay in all of Gayonia... but fortunately you let enough of your personality peek through all the gay for me to keep coming back. You also make me smile and roll my eyes in equal proportions, and it's really annoying when I have the perfect comeback line for something you've blogged about, and find that one of your regular commentators has beaten me to it. Damn them.

Blogger #14: You're someone I admire for the same reasons as Blogger #11... you seem to be incredibly brave and confident... but then, to do the things you do, you would have to be. I think that you're another one of those people who's the triple threat... sexy, smart and sweet. The sexy thing just goes without saying, I mean, look at you... but you're actually a lot smarter than I think anyone ever gives you credit for. And if you weren't as sweet and humble as you seem to be, I wouldn't like you as much as I do. I don't think there's any limit to what you can do when you put your mind to it. Good luck!

And you can all try and guess who is who until the cows come home, I'm not telling...

movies: the lake house

the lake house - how do you hold on to someone you've never met?Originally we'd intended to go and see Hoodwinked tonight... but the more I saw of the animation in all the commercials advertising it, the less enthusiastic I became about it... so instead we went to see The Lake House... even though I'd heard some less than stellar reports.

Turns out they were wrong...

Sure, its not the best plot in the world, and Ma actually worked out what was going to happen towards the end of the movie while we were still about ten minutes into the thing... but it was sweet and kind of moving.

Of course it was a little bit ruined by the four monumentally rude people sitting behind us... two of whom kept talking until first Ma, then I told them, in very quick succession, to be quiet... then another one of them kept getting up and leaving and then coming back... then one of the talker's mobile went off right during a pivotal emotional (and, might I add SILENT) scene towards the end of the movie... grrrr... just stay home and watch your goddamn teevee next time people... please!

Anyway... I'm ever so slightly partial to both Keanu and Sandra (Keanu moreso, naturally), and it was nice to see them together again... without being on a bus. There is always something a little sad and melancholy about Sandra, no matter what movie she's in, and it actually worked well for her here. And Keanu just seems to feel more solid and grounded as time goes on... he's just THERE... in his skin... doin' his thing. It works for him. Actually I think neither of them really had to stretch themselves for these roles. And I don't mean that in a bad way... both characters just seemed very real.

Sure, for the movie to work, you have to suspend disbelieve about the whole "time travelling mail box" thing... but, c'mon... I like stuff like that anyway (I've seen far too much Star Trek for any kind of time travel to really phase me)... so, really, I had no problem with that. It did bug me a tiny bit a couple of times where the two characters were essentially having a conversation across time instead of communicating the way you would if you were writing letters like that... but then there is only so much they could do with that in a movie, as opposed to say a book (and I actually wonder if the movie was based on a book... I know it was a remake of the Korean film, Siworae... but the concept just seems that it would lend itself to a book very easily). Either that, or the whole movie would be the two of them sitting next to the mailbox trading letters.

And I have to say that while the lake house itself was essentially a third character in the movie, I actually didn't like it... the first couple of full looks at it we got, I just though "That is one ugly-ass, impractical house!"... and my opinion didn't improve much during the course of the movie. I did come to understand why it looked the way it did... I still thought it was ugly, but at least it made sense.

My only advise to anyone seeing the movie is not to try and over analyse the temporal mechanics (could I be a bigger nerd) of how the end of the movie works... you'll do your head in... just accept it as presented and leave it at that.

yani's rating: 3 temporal mailboxes out of 5

bluedragon's birthday

happy birthday scalyI mentioned on Monday that I was working on BlueDragon's birthday cybercard... well here's the finished product... okay, so I'm a big show off, this isn't news... I just wanted to show off my handywork... I scaled it down (no pun intended) to about half size, but you get the idea.

The Scaly and Furry nicknames actually come from his "alias" as a dragon, obviously... and mine, which was wolf related... they morphed over time and many emails into their current form. Plus, using his nickname on the card took up more space than his actual name, which was good for the effect I was going for.

BD shares his birthday with Napoleon Bonaparte, Julia Child, Princess Anne, Debra Messing, Ben Affleck and Natasha Henstridge.

montage monday: linear park mark iii

linear park mark 3 2006Yes, I know... two back-to-back Monday Montages with shots from Linear Park... this is the last one, I promise (at least until I go down there again). I had so many good shots left over from my last excursion though, it would have been a shame to let them go to waste. And whereas last time I just used any old shot that took my fancy, this time I tried to stay more to natural things, or at least earthy tones.

See... I put way too much thought into these things sometimes...

Speaking of putting way to much into a project... before I went to bed last night I thought I would just start playing around with an idea I'd been having for BlueDragon's birthday cybercard... every year lately (partly because I'm cheap and also broke and can't send stuff to the other side of the world) I make him up a cybercard for his birthday (and for Christmas too... which has led to me doing the same thing for J)... basically just throwing some text over an appropriately scantily clad male form, a little tweak here and there, a little Photoshop gloss and we're away... but this year, because I'd spent a bunch of time yesterday morning visiting a blog I found through a link to a link to a link which was full of the aforementioned scantily clad male images... and because I downloaded a truckload of said images... I thought about doing a much less formal montage and then ones I do for the blog and then adding some transparent layers and text effects, etc... long story... anyway... I started throwing something together last night before bed... and before I knew it, not only had I done the whole montage... but it was 12:30am and I'd been working on it for about two hours... *sigh* I'm so easily sucked into a project like that...

I might have actually started the project a little earlier, but after last night's episode of CSI, I ended up on the phone to Ma, and well, we ended up talking crap for over an hour... all because Lady Heather showed up on CSI again (although the conversaion wasn't limited to Lady Heather or CSI)...

And the timing could not have been more odd... in the comments for the Inner Californian quiz I posted on Saturday, Tom mentioned that his result was the OC... which made me think of not the cute and docile boys of The OC, oh no... but Julie Cooper... who is played by Melinda Clarke... who also plays, you guessed it, Lady Heather...

I swear though, all three of the CSI episodes featuring Lady Heather ROCK! Slaves of Las Vegas, Lady Heather's Box and last night's addition, Pirates of the Third Reich... too, too, too, too, too cool...

Okay, I'm going to send this out into the universe in the hopes that someone somewhere is paying attention... What Jerry Bruckheimer and CBS really need to do is put out character-arc related DVD collections... Joss Whedon did it with Buffy... the folks over at Star Trek did it (in fact they just came out with a new Borg Collective DVD)... take three or four of each character's defining episodes and put them on a single DVD... slap an interview with that actor about their character on it... maybe get them to do audio commentary for the episodes, I don't know... but in addition to the regular cast of characters, they TOTALLY need to add one for Lady Heather! Seriously! Slap a $19.95 price tag on it, even if it is only three episodes, I'd SO buy it!

Okay, enough with the bad corporate sales pitches... lets move on...

Looking through the job ads last night, I was flicking my eyes across the government vacancies (most of which are usually either much, much too high, or much, much too low a level for me to even bother with), when a familiar name caught my eye... one of my former bosses, not at my last contract, but the last major contract before that... advertising for a Assistant Project Officer... I shot her off a quick email this morning just to say hey and kind of ask what the job was all about... maybe get the Job and Person Specification if it sounds okay... no email back from her yet though...

Also last night, David from Big Brother (or David Graham to give him his real world name) won the title of "Australia's Brainiest BB06 Housemate"... scary really... and no, for the record, I didn't watch the show... I just tuned in for the final minute and a half to see who the winner was going to be, and luckily it was David... you go Farmer Dave!

Around the same time yesterday three of my dumbass neighbours decided that they needed to stand around outside and have a conversation... which would have been fine, had it not been for the fact that they chose to stand around RIGHT OUTSIDE MY LIVING ROOM WINDOW... After sitting there with steam coming out of my ears for several minutes waiting for them to wander off of their own accord, I had to stick my head out the door and politely ask them to push off... which they did... *mutter dumbass neighbours mutter*... you would have though I'd been confronting axe murderers or wrestling tigers from the way my heart was beating a mile a minute when I came back inside though... stoopid me...

Weirdly though when witnessing something that could actually have turned nasty on Saturday afternoon I was much calmer... granted I wasn't involved... but when Ma and I were at the shops for the second time (more on that in a second), we were standing outside a card shop, drinking our Boost Juices, minding our own business, looking at stuffed toy puppies, when suddenly some random tattooed hooligan crash-tackled a second baseball cap wearing hooligan... initially I thought they were friends and were being overly bouncy and one of them had mistimed his jump and fallen down, ha ha very amusing... but then they started pushing each other and being very aggressive.... before the tattooed dude just jumped the other guy and started swinging at him... which backed the baseball capped guy's buddies up... so that they were right in front of us... Ma and I actually did that whole frozen bunny thing... we just went completely still... waiting for the predators to either finish kicking the crap out of each other and leave, or else turn on the bunnies... luckily they just did a bunch of macho bullcrap posturing and then went on their way. The only thing that I'm not terribly proud of is that because we just froze in position, Ma was actually closer to the action than I was... technically I should have moved her behind me... but both of us just froze in place... so... yeah...

Technically we shouldn't have even been there when the "fight" was going on, but we'd gone down to West Lakes in search of various low, low priced DVDs... (it's a sickness... I need help... or a support group... or something) and had done some grocery shopping... then when we got back to my place and I was putting my stuff away I realised that I didn't have a parcel of ham we'd gotten... and after not being able to find it either in the house or in the car, we realised that I were also missing tomatoes, mushrooms, half a melon of some sort (which was actually Ma's) and some beans... the dumbass dude at the checkout hadn't given us the last bag... so back to West Lakes we had to go... which wasn't too bad, since it was a really nice day on Saturday...

While we were having breakfast on Saturday morning (not at West Lakes, but at Arndale, where we normally go to the movies) I ran the idea past Ma of giving up Camera Club that I floated out into the universe in my post last Tuesday... I'd actually expected her to some up with more reasons not to than she did... I still haven't made a final decision though... we'll have to wait and see...

I have a major thing about blossoms like this... either apple blossoms or cherry blossoms... or whatever kind this was... I can't explain it, I just think they're stunning... and then there's the bonus of getting a bee to sit still in one place long enough to get a shot that's actually in focus.

Current Mood: a little hungry, a little cold, a little annoyed, but okay

I had a whole other idea picked out for today's Random Hotness, but then I was watching The Glass House last night... and there was Eddie Ifft... so very pretty... so very American... so very Hotness...

This is not the first time I've been made one of the guest panelist on The Glass House my Random Hotness for the week... and Eddie is both funny and hot (yet, unfortunately straight)... but what most of his photos don't show is how much sexier he gets when he smiles (and I know he's smiling in the shot on the right, but trust me, the smile gets about 20 times better than that). Sure it's a big American smile full of huge white American teeth... but it's still as sexy as all hell...
